How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Can Support Sports Performance

As a Performance Psychologist and Sports Psychologist (iT), my primary goal is to help athletes unlock their full potential, both in training and in competition.

Currently my core therapeutic model is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which provides a robust, evidence-based framework for understanding how an athlete’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are intricately linked. However, I do have one specific qualification that I consider to be an absolute superpower, my accreditation in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Integrating hypnotherapy as a tool takes my psychological work to an entirely different level. It allows me to bypass the conscious resistance that athletes sometimes build up during traditional cognitive work, speaking directly to the subconscious mind to create rapid, lasting, and deeply ingrained positive change.

Two complementing approaches

To understand why this combination is so powerful, it is helpful to look at how the two approaches complement each other. In sport, athletes frequently develop negative thought patterns or cognitive distortions regarding a poor performance, a recurring injury, or a specific technical issue. Through CBT, we do the crucial work of identifying and challenging these unhelpful thoughts. But replacing a deeply entrenched belief solely through conscious effort can sometimes take time. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can act as an accelerator. Once we know what needs to change, this tool flips the narrative completely. Instead of dwelling on the problem, we use the solution-focused approach to ask what it would look like if everything were right, constructing a detailed, positive picture of their future success.

Catalyst for change

This is where the hypnotherapy element becomes the catalyst for change. The state of hypnosis, or trance, is simply a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. In this state, the brain produces alpha and theta waves, which are the exact same brainwave frequencies associated with the elusive flow state, or being entirely in the zone. By guiding an athlete into this relaxed state, we quiet the critical, analytical part of the mind that we have been engaging in our cognitive sessions. The subconscious mind becomes highly receptive to the new, positive suggestions we have developed together. Crucially, the subconscious mind cannot distinguish between a real event and one that is vividly imagined. Therefore, when an athlete mentally rehearses a perfect training session or a winning sprint while in a state of trance, their brain genuinely believes they have just achieved it.

Remarkable results

In terms of sport and performance, the results of using this technique are remarkable. I use it to help athletes overcome crippling performance anxiety. While our cognitive work rationalises and reframes the fear, the hypnotherapy ensures they can execute their skills under the intense glare of competition just as smoothly as they do in training.

Furthermore, it is an invaluable tool for injury rehabilitation. Often, an athlete will heal physically and understand logically that they are safe, but retain a subconscious psychological block, terrified of re-injury. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy gently removes this lingering trauma at a subconscious level, allowing the athlete to trust their body again and return to peak physical exertion without hesitation or fear.

Beyond the sport

Yet, the benefits of this superpower extend far beyond the parameters of the pitch, track, or pool. Athletes are human beings first, and their general mental health is inextricably linked to their athletic performance. You cannot expect a profoundly stressed or anxious individual to perform optimally. When managing general anxiety, depression, and the overwhelming pressures of modern life, hypnotherapy is incredibly effective at settling the nervous system so our cognitive work can truly take root. We talk frequently in this practice about the stress bucket. Every negative thought or worry adds to this metaphorical bucket, and when it overflows, we experience anxiety or panic. Using the trance state as a therapeutic tool directly empties this stress bucket, calming the nervous system and restoring emotional equilibrium.

Perhaps one of the most significant general health benefits, which links directly back into athletic performance, is the improvement in sleep quality. Sleep is the ultimate performance enhancer; it is when the body repairs muscle tissue and the brain consolidates’ learning and memory. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy specifically targets the mechanisms that promote deep, restorative sleep. Athletes who struggle with insomnia due to pre-competition nerves find that they can finally switch off. This ensures they have the cognitive energy required for our psychological work and allows them to wake up physically refreshed and mentally sharp.

Coaches and team leaders play a crucial role in shaping the mental environment. By modelling positive self-talk, resilience, and effective coping strategies, they set a precedent for the entire team. Their behaviour can inspire players to adopt similar attitudes, creating a culture where ANTs are acknowledged but not allowed to dominate the narrative.

A superpower

Ultimately, having an accreditation in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy allows me to offer a complete, holistic service that perfectly enhances my core therapeutic model. It bridges the gap between consciously wanting to change and changing at a fundamental level. By using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to understand the mind, and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy as a tool to bypass resistance, manage the stress bucket, and utilise the incredible power of the subconscious mind, I can help athletes build unwavering resilience. It is not magic but based entirely in neuroscience and psychology. However, when you see an athlete transform from being crippled by doubt to stepping into their sporting arena with absolute quiet confidence, having this tool in my toolbox certainly feels like a superpower.
